Passcode-based bypass of biometrics-gated Protected Apps in Apple App Protection

IdentifiersCVE-2026-28895CWE-287

CVE-2026-28895 is an App Protection vulnerability in Apple iOS and iPadOS that was fixed in iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4. According to Apple's advisory, when Stolen Device Protection is enabled, an attacker with physical access to the device may be able to access biometrics-gated Protected Apps using the device passcode. Apple states the issue was addressed with improved checks. Based on the vendor description, the flaw is an authentication or protection-enforcement bypass in the App Protection logic governing access to apps that should require biometric authentication under Stolen Device Protection.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a person with physical possession of a targeted iPhone or iPad to bypass the intended biometric gate protecting certain apps and gain unauthorized access to those Protected Apps using only the passcode. This weakens the security guarantees of Stolen Device Protection and can expose app contents and associated sensitive user data that should have remained restricted behind biometric verification.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patching is complete, reduce exposure by maintaining strict physical control of devices, minimizing opportunities for device theft or temporary hands-on access, and using Stolen Device Protection and strong passcodes as defense-in-depth even though this issue weakens the biometric gate for Protected Apps. Because the vulnerability specifically requires physical access, organizational mitigations should focus on device custody and rapid response for lost or stolen devices.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Apple's fix by updating affected devices to iOS 26.4 or iPadOS 26.4, where Apple states the issue was resolved through improved checks. Standard remediation is to ensure supported iPhone and iPad devices are fully updated to the vendor-patched release.
