Microsoft Edge Cross-Device Managed Sign-In Origin Validation Security Bypass

IdentifiersCVE-2026-45492CWE-346

CVE-2026-45492 is a security bypass vulnerability in Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) affecting the cross-device managed sign-in mechanism. The flaw is caused by insufficient validation of the origin of web content, allowing an unauthorized remote attacker to bypass an intended security restriction and access restricted functionality. Public reporting describes the issue as an origin validation error / improper input validation condition within the managed sign-in workflow. Exploitation requires user interaction: the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The issue is rated CVSS 4.3 and was disclosed by Orange Tsai of the DEVCORE Research Team.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a remote attacker to bypass a security feature in Edge and gain access to restricted functionality exposed by the vulnerable cross-device managed sign-in flow. On its own, the published impact is limited to integrity-related security bypass rather than direct confidentiality loss, availability loss, or standalone code execution. However, the flaw can be chained with other vulnerabilities to expand attacker capability, including potentially enabling arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user when combined with a suitable secondary issue.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patched, reduce exposure by limiting user interaction with untrusted web content and files, including blocking or closely scrutinizing malicious or unexpected links, attachments, and downloaded files that could open in Edge. Enterprise defenders should monitor for suspicious browser-driven authentication or sign-in flows and avoid chaining opportunities by promptly remediating other browser and endpoint vulnerabilities. Least-privilege user operation can reduce downstream impact if the issue is combined with another flaw.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply the Microsoft Edge security update released by Microsoft for CVE-2026-45492. Microsoft has issued a vendor fix correcting the origin validation weakness in the cross-device managed sign-in mechanism. Update Edge through the normal Microsoft Edge update channel or Microsoft Update, and apply any related operating system updates if prompted as part of the servicing chain.
