Use-After-Free RCE in Adobe Acrobat Reader Annotation Handling

IdentifiersCVE-2026-47915CWE-416· Use After Free

CVE-2026-47915 is a use-after-free vulnerability affecting Adobe Acrobat Reader versions 24.001.30365, 26.001.21651, and earlier. The flaw is reported in Annots.api during handling of Annotation objects. By performing actions in JavaScript within a malicious document or page context, an attacker can trigger reuse of a pointer after it has been freed. This memory corruption condition can be leveraged to achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user/process. Public reporting also associates the issue with ZDI-26-349 and internal identifier ZDI-CAN-29886.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user. Because the vulnerability is a memory corruption flaw, exploitation may allow full compromise of the affected Acrobat Reader process, including theft or modification of data accessible to that user and potential follow-on activity under the user's privileges.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patches are deployed, avoid opening untrusted or unexpected PDF files or other attacker-supplied content in Acrobat Reader. Because exploitation requires user interaction, enforce safe document-handling practices, restrict opening of suspicious files from untrusted sources, and reduce exposure to malicious web content that could deliver crafted files or trigger document opening workflows.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Apply Adobe's security update referenced in bulletin APSB26-63. Upgrade Adobe Acrobat Reader to a version newer than 24.001.30365 and 26.001.21651, as versions at or below those releases are affected.
