CVE-1999-0046 is a classic stack-based buffer overflow in the rlogin program triggered by an overly long TERM environment variable. The vulnerability arises because rlogin copies environment-supplied terminal type data into a fixed-size buffer without adequate bounds checking. This unchecked copy can overwrite adjacent memory and corrupt process state, making the flaw representative of CWE-120, Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input.
