CVE-2000-0972 is a local file disclosure vulnerability in the setuid crontab utility on HP-UX 11.00. When invoked with the -e option, crontab edits a user-controlled file during an interactive session but does not safely prevent that file reference from being replaced with a symbolic link before subsequent processing. A local attacker can swap the file being edited with a symlink to an arbitrary target file, exit the editing session, and cause crontab to parse the linked target as though it were a crontab. If parsing fails, crontab emits error messages containing content derived from the target file, thereby disclosing data from files the attacker would not normally be permitted to read. The weakness is a link-following flaw involving improper resolution of a pathname in a privileged context.
