CVE-2000-0993 is a format string vulnerability in the pw_error function in the BSD libutil library. A local user can supply a malformed password (e.g., via utilities such as chpass or passwd that invoke libutil) that is subsequently used as a format string, enabling unintended memory reads/writes. Because affected utilities may run with elevated privileges (e.g., SUID root), successful exploitation can result in privilege escalation to root.
