CVE-2001-0609 is a remote format string vulnerability in Infodrom cfingerd 1.4.3 and earlier. A malformed ident reply can be incorporated into a syslog call as a format string rather than being safely treated as data. This allows attacker-controlled format specifiers to be interpreted by the logging function. Available context also indicates an off-by-one condition contributed to improper string termination, causing two strings to be merged and enabling the format string condition. The flaw can be triggered remotely through crafted ident protocol responses processed by the service.
