A vulnerability in GNU locate as distributed with findutils 4.1 on Slackware 7.1 and 8.0 allows local users to gain elevated privileges. The issue arises when locate processes an old formatted locatedb database file containing an entry with an out-of-range offset, leading to arbitrary memory writes within the locate process. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running locate, potentially root if locate is setuid.
