CVE-2001-1246 is a command injection vulnerability in PHP 4.0.5 through 4.1.0 when safe mode is enabled. The flaw is in the handling of the fifth parameter to the mail() function, which is incorporated into a command string used in a dangerous popen() call without proper neutralization. Because shell metacharacters in that parameter are not properly cleansed, an attacker can inject unintended shell syntax and cause arbitrary operating system commands to be executed. The issue is primarily described as affecting local users, with possible remote exploitation where attacker-controlled input can be passed into the vulnerable mail() parameter by an application.
