CVE-2002-0649 is a remotely exploitable buffer overflow in the SQL Server Resolution Service / SQL Server Resolution Service (SSRS) component of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE). The vulnerable service listens on UDP port 1434 and improperly handles crafted packets. Reported attack vectors include a packet containing a 0x04 byte that causes the SQL Monitor thread to generate an overly long registry key name, and a packet containing a 0x08 byte followed by a long string that triggers heap corruption. Successful exploitation can cause denial of service or arbitrary code execution in the context of the SQL Server service account. This is the vulnerability later mass-exploited by the SQL Slammer/Sapphire worm.
