CVE-2002-0653 is an off-by-one buffer overflow in the ssl_compat_directive function of mod_ssl 2.8.9 and earlier, as reached through the rewrite_command hook in Apache. The flaw can be triggered through crafted .htaccess content containing overly long entries, causing a one-byte overwrite condition in processing of compatibility directives. Successful exploitation allows a local user who can influence per-directory Apache configuration through .htaccess files to corrupt memory in the Apache process and execute arbitrary code in the security context of the Apache server user.
