CVE-2002-1337 is a remote buffer overflow in Sendmail versions 5.79 through 8.12.7. The flaw is triggered when Sendmail processes certain specially formatted email address fields, specifically sender and recipient header comments, in the crackaddr function within headers.c. The vulnerable parsing logic mishandles comment characters in address fields, leading to improper bounds handling during address processing and allowing an overwrite of memory beyond the intended buffer. Because the flaw is reachable through crafted message headers, it can be exploited remotely.
