CVE-2002-1503 is a stack-based buffer overflow in Automatic File Distributor (AFD) 1.2.14 and earlier. The flaw is triggered when an overly long value is supplied through the MON_WORK_DIR environment variable or the -w (workdir) command-line argument. The vulnerable input is processed by multiple AFD-related executables, specifically afd, afdcmd, afd_ctrl, init_afd, mafd, mon_ctrl, show_olog, and udc, without proper bounds checking. A local attacker can exploit this condition to overwrite memory and execute code in the context of the affected process, resulting in privilege escalation where the binaries run with elevated privileges.
