Sendmail versions prior to 8.12.9 contain a vulnerability in the address parsing code, specifically the prescan() function in parseaddr.c. Due to improper handling of certain char/int conversions, Sendmail can misinterpret an input value as the special NOCHAR control value, effectively disabling an intended length check. This can lead to a stack-based buffer overflow when processing specially crafted email addresses, enabling remote denial of service and potentially arbitrary code execution. This issue is distinct from CVE-2002-1337.
