CVE-2003-0681 is a remotely reachable buffer overflow vulnerability in Sendmail 8.12.9 involving ruleset parsing. The flaw is triggered when Sendmail processes nonstandard recipient, final, or mailer-specific envelope recipient rulesets. Available technical reporting also associates the issue with unsafe memory handling in the prescan() path, where malformed input can lead to an off-by-one overwrite of adjacent heap metadata during address parsing. Subsequent processing can use the corrupted state in later validation and memory-management operations, creating a path to memory corruption. The issue affects network-exposed mail processing and has been described as potentially enabling arbitrary code execution on vulnerable systems.
