CVE-2004-1315 is a remote code-execution vulnerability in phpBB 2.x before 2.0.11. The forum software improperly performs URL decoding while extracting words and phrases supplied through the highlight parameter. An attacker can double-encode input so that dangerous special characters emerge after decoding and are incorporated into data subsequently processed through PHP command execution functionality. This permits execution of arbitrary PHP code.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (modules/exploits/unix/webapp/phpbb_highlight.rb) that exploits arbitrary PHP code execution vulnerabilities in phpBB versions 2.0.4 through 2.0.15. The exploit targets the 'highlight' parameter in the 'viewtopic.php' script, which is vulnerable to code injection due to improper input validation. The module can automatically discover a valid topic ID or use a user-supplied one, then crafts a malicious request to execute arbitrary system commands on the target server. The payload is customizable and leverages the Metasploit framework's command payloads. The main attack vector is network-based, exploiting a web application endpoint. The module is weaponized, allowing for easy payload customization and automated exploitation. The only endpoints referenced are the phpBB root directory and the vulnerable 'viewtopic.php' script.
