Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0 is vulnerable to memory corruption when processing a web page containing embedded CLSIDs that reference certain COM objects that are not intended to be instantiated as ActiveX controls (e.g., devenum.dll, diactfrm.dll, wmm2filt.dll, shell32.dll, mshtml.dll, inetcfg.dll, comsvcs.dll, msconf.dll, among others). Instantiating these non-ActiveX COM objects via embedded CLSIDs can trigger memory corruption, resulting in an application crash (denial of service) and potentially enabling arbitrary code execution in the context of the user running Internet Explorer. This issue is also referred to as the "COM Object Instantiation Memory Corruption Vulnerability" and is distinct from CVE-2005-2087.
