CVE-2006-5051 is a signal-handler race condition in OpenSSH sshd before 4.4 that occurs in handling of the LoginGraceTime timeout. When authentication is not completed before the grace period expires, sshd processes SIGALRM and may execute cleanup logic multiple times. This race can lead to a double-free condition. The issue is primarily exposed in vulnerable OpenSSH releases earlier than 4.4p1 that were not backport-patched, and later discussion of the flaw notes that it was the basis for a regression reintroduced much later in newer OpenSSH versions. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely and is documented as causing daemon crashes; if GSSAPI authentication is enabled, the memory corruption may also be exploitable for arbitrary code execution.
