A stack-based buffer overflow exists in the DCE/RPC preprocessor of Snort (prior to 2.6.1.3 and 2.7 beta 2) and Sourcefire Intrusion Sensor. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of the writeX_len variable in the ReassembleSMBWriteX() function, which processes SMB WriteAndX commands. An attacker can send specially crafted SMB packets to a network monitored by Snort, causing a stack buffer overflow and potentially allowing remote code execution with the privileges of the Snort process. The DCE/RPC preprocessor is enabled by default, making most deployments vulnerable unless explicitly disabled.

This repository contains a single Metasploit exploit module targeting a buffer overflow vulnerability in the DCE/RPC preprocessor of Snort (CVE-2006-5276). The exploit allows remote code execution on IDS systems running vulnerable versions of Snort or SourceFire IDS by sending specially crafted SMB Write AndX requests to any host on the monitored network. The exploit does not require the remote host to be running an SMB service; it only needs to be on a network monitored by a vulnerable Snort instance. The module constructs a malicious SMB packet and sends it over TCP port 139, triggering the overflow in the IDS. The payload is customizable and supports both Windows and Linux targets, with hardcoded return addresses and offsets for each. The exploit is operational and leverages Metasploit's payload system for arbitrary code execution. The repository is structured as a single Ruby file compatible with the Metasploit framework, and all exploit logic is contained within this file.
