CVE-2006-5836 is a vulnerability in the Darwin/XNU kernel (Apple Mac OS X) implementation of the fpathconf() system call, specifically in bsd/kern/kern_descrip.c (reported for XNU 8.8.1). By invoking fpathconf() with a file descriptor whose underlying file type is not recognized/handled by the kernel code path, a local user can trigger a kernel panic (denial of service). Some reports also indicate the flaw may be exploitable for arbitrary code execution in kernel context, depending on how the unhandled file type is processed.
