An argument injection vulnerability exists on Windows when Microsoft Internet Explorer invokes Mozilla Firefox via registered protocol handlers (FirefoxURL and FirefoxHTML). If Firefox is installed and these URI schemes are registered, a remote attacker can supply a crafted FirefoxURL: or FirefoxHTML: URI containing shell metacharacters that are incorporated into the command line used to launch firefox.exe. Due to improper delimiting/quoting of the URL argument when constructing the invocation, attacker-controlled metacharacters can alter the intended command-line arguments, enabling cross-browser scripting and potentially arbitrary command execution in the context of the user. The issue was debated as to whether it resides in IE or Firefox; CVE’s position (as of 2007-07-11) was that IE fails to properly delimit the URL argument, though Mozilla issued a defense-in-depth fix to reduce exposure.
