CVE-2008-5161 is a confidentiality weakness in SSH implementations including affected SSH Tectia products and OpenSSH 4.7p1, triggered when SSH sessions use block ciphers in Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode. The issue stems from error handling behavior in the SSH Binary Packet Protocol around malformed or tampered ciphertext and MAC processing, which makes it easier for a remote attacker to recover limited portions of plaintext from an arbitrary ciphertext block within an SSH session. Reported analyses indicate recovery of up to 32 bits of plaintext with a low probability of success per attempt. The vulnerability does not describe direct code execution or authentication bypass; it is an information disclosure issue affecting encrypted SSH traffic confidentiality.
