CVE-2009-1136 is a remote code execution vulnerability in the Microsoft Office Web Components Spreadsheet ActiveX control (OWC10/OWC11) when instantiated in Internet Explorer. A remote attacker can trigger memory corruption/unsafe behavior by invoking the control’s msDataSourceObject method with crafted parameters/calls, leading to execution of arbitrary code in the context of the user running IE. The issue affected OWC10/OWC11 as shipped with multiple Microsoft products (including Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP3, and ISA Server 2004/2006) and was exploited in the wild in mid-2009; Microsoft referred to it as the “Office Web Components HTML Script Vulnerability.”

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (Ruby file) that exploits a memory corruption vulnerability (CVE-2009-1136) in the Microsoft Office Web Components (OWC) Spreadsheet ActiveX control (versions 10 and 11). The exploit is delivered via a malicious HTTP server that serves a specially crafted HTML/JavaScript page to Internet Explorer users on Windows XP. The JavaScript performs a heap spray and attempts to instantiate the vulnerable ActiveX control, triggering the vulnerability and executing attacker-supplied shellcode. The module leverages Metasploit's payload system, allowing the attacker to select from a variety of payloads (e.g., reverse shell, meterpreter). The main attack vector is browser-based, requiring user interaction (visiting a malicious page). The only fingerprintable endpoints are the ActiveX class identifiers for the vulnerable controls. The repository is operational and ready for use within the Metasploit framework.
