CVE-2009-1897 is a local privilege-escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel TUN/TAP subsystem affecting Linux kernel 2.6.30 and 2.6.30.1. In tun_chr_poll, the tun pointer is dereferenced before it is checked for NULL. When the kernel is built without GCC's -fno-delete-null-pointer-checks option, compiler optimization can remove the later NULL check. A local user can trigger the condition through operations involving /dev/net/tun, including mapping it, and exploit a mapped zero page to turn the NULL-pointer dereference into privilege escalation.
