CVE-2011-4122 is a directory-traversal vulnerability in OpenPAM's pam_start() service-name handling, affecting versions before revision r478 on FreeBSD 8.1. OpenPAM treats a PAM service name as a path relative to its PAM policy directories but does not validate the name. A local user who can supply a service name to a privileged PAM-using application can include path-traversal sequences to select an attacker-controlled PAM policy. That policy can direct the privileged application to load an attacker-controlled dynamic shared object as a PAM module.
