CVE-2012-3993 is a critical vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox (prior to 16.0), Firefox ESR (prior to 10.0.8), Thunderbird (prior to 16.0), Thunderbird ESR (prior to 10.0.8), and SeaMonkey (prior to 2.13). The Chrome Object Wrapper (COW) implementation failed to properly handle InstallTrigger method failures, allowing remote attackers to manipulate the prototype chain of error objects. This XrayWrapper pollution enabled exposure of privileged chrome functions to web content, resulting in the possibility of executing arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module: 'firefox_proto_crmfrequest.rb', which exploits two vulnerabilities (CVE-2012-3993 and CVE-2013-1710) in Mozilla Firefox versions 5.0 through 15.0.1. The exploit leverages a flaw in the InstallTrigger global and the crypto.generateCRMFRequest function to escalate privileges and execute code in the browser's chrome context. The module serves a malicious HTML page with obfuscated JavaScript that abuses these vulnerabilities to silently install a malicious Firefox add-on (XPI file) via the AddonManager API. The main attack vector is a browser-based drive-by attack, requiring the victim to visit a web page controlled by the attacker. The endpoint '/addon.xpi' is used to deliver the malicious payload. The exploit is weaponized, as it is part of the Metasploit framework and automates the entire attack chain, including payload delivery and execution.
