CVE-2014-1610 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability in MediaWiki versions 1.22.x before 1.22.2, 1.21.x before 1.21.5, and 1.19.x before 1.19.11. The vulnerability arises from improper sanitization of user-supplied parameters (notably the 'page' parameter in includes/media/DjVu.php and the 'w' parameter in thumb.php, processed by includes/media/PdfHandler_body.php). When DjVu or PDF file upload support is enabled, attackers can inject shell metacharacters, leading to arbitrary command execution on the server. Additional vectors were found in includes/media/Bitmap.php and includes/media/ImageHandler.php, all related to insufficient input validation and lack of shell argument escaping in image and PDF handling code.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (mediawiki_thumb.rb) that exploits a remote command execution vulnerability (CVE-2014-1610) in MediaWiki installations. The exploit targets MediaWiki versions 1.22.x before 1.22.2, 1.21.x before 1.21.5, and 1.19.x before 1.19.11, specifically when DjVu or PDF file upload support is enabled. The module can operate unauthenticated if file upload is open, or use provided credentials if authentication is required. It works by uploading a malicious DjVu or PDF file and then sending a crafted request to thumb.php, exploiting shell metacharacter injection to execute arbitrary commands. The module supports multiple payload types, including PHP code execution and OS command execution for both Unix and Windows targets. The main endpoints involved are /mediawiki/index.php (for version checking and authentication) and /mediawiki/thumb.php (for triggering the exploit). The code is written in Ruby and is fully integrated into the Metasploit framework, making it a weaponized exploit suitable for penetration testing and red teaming.
