A vulnerability in the Group Policy implementation of multiple Microsoft Windows versions exposes credentials distributed through Group Policy Preferences. The flaw stems from improper handling of password distribution in Group Policy Preferences, allowing remote authenticated users with access to the SYSVOL share to retrieve sensitive credential information. Because those stored credentials can belong to privileged accounts, an attacker can use the recovered secrets to elevate privileges within the affected Windows environment. The issue was exploited in the wild in 2014.
