The flaw affects the browser-side XSS protection mechanism rather than the target web application itself. By causing the filter to incorrectly disable or fail to enforce protection on certain HTML attributes, an attacker can bypass this defense layer and execute malicious script in an unintended security context. Microsoft identified this issue as the Internet Explorer XSS Filter Bypass Vulnerability and addressed it in cumulative update 3008923.
