CVE-2015-0240 is a critical vulnerability in the Netlogon server implementation of smbd in Samba versions 3.5.x and 3.6.x before 3.6.25, 4.0.x before 4.0.25, 4.1.x before 4.1.17, and 4.2.x before 4.2.0rc5. The flaw arises from the use of TALLOC_FREE() on an uninitialized stack pointer in the _netr_ServerPasswordSet function (rpc_server/netlogon/srv_netlog_nt.c). Remote, unauthenticated attackers can exploit this by sending specially-crafted Netlogon packets to the ServerPasswordSet RPC API, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution as root. The vulnerability is more easily exploitable in older Samba versions due to the absence of pointer initialization, while newer versions require specific configuration to be vulnerable.
