CVE-2016-0736 is a padding-oracle vulnerability in Apache HTTP Server mod_session_crypto affecting Apache HTTP Server 2.4.0 through 2.4.23. The module encrypted browser-stored session data using configured CBC or ECB ciphers, with AES-256-CBC as the default, but did not authenticate ciphertext or verify its integrity. Modified ciphertext could therefore be submitted to the application and its padding-validation behavior used as an oracle, particularly for CBC-mode encryption. This can enable decryption of protected session contents and construction or alteration of encrypted session data.
