CVE-2016-1247 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability affecting certain nginx packages on Debian, Ubuntu, and Gentoo. The issue arises from a symlink attack against the nginx error log. A local user who already has access to the web server user account can manipulate the error log path via a symbolic link so that privileged log-handling behavior writes to or operates on an attacker-controlled target. This can be leveraged to obtain root privileges on the affected system.
