CVE-2016-6664, also assigned the duplicate identifier CVE-2016-5617, is a local privilege-escalation vulnerability in MySQL-family mysqld_safe wrappers. When file-based logging is enabled, mysqld_safe insecurely creates and changes ownership or permissions of its error log while executing with root privileges. An attacker controlling the mysql operating-system account can replace a writable log file with a symbolic link to an attacker-selected target and induce mysqld_safe to recreate the log, such as by terminating the mysqld child process. This can cause attacker-selected files to be created or modified under mysql ownership, enabling escalation from mysql to root.
