A vulnerability in the UsersModelRegistration class in controllers/user.php of the Joomla! Users component (prior to version 3.6.4) allows remote attackers to create user accounts even when user registration is disabled. This occurs due to a failure to properly check the Allow User Registration configuration setting before processing registration requests.

This repository contains a single Metasploit auxiliary module (joomla_registration_privesc.rb) that exploits two Joomla vulnerabilities (CVE-2016-8869 and CVE-2016-8870) affecting versions 3.4.4 through 3.6.3. The module allows an attacker to create an arbitrary user account with administrative privileges by sending crafted HTTP requests to the Joomla user registration endpoint. The exploit checks the Joomla version, retrieves CSRF tokens, and submits a multipart/form-data POST request to create the new admin user. If the target Joomla instance requires email activation, the account will be disabled until activated via email. The module is operational and provides the attacker with admin access to the Joomla site if successful. The main attack vector is network-based, targeting the Joomla web application over HTTP. The only endpoints involved are the base URI and the user registration endpoint. The code is written in Ruby and is designed to be run within the Metasploit framework.
