CVE-2017-0358 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the ntfs-3g package, specifically in the setuid root binary /bin/ntfs-3g. When the system kernel does not support FUSE filesystems, ntfs-3g attempts to load the 'fuse' kernel module by invoking /sbin/modprobe. However, it fails to sanitize environment variables, notably MODPROBE_OPTIONS, before this invocation. A local attacker can manipulate MODPROBE_OPTIONS to force modprobe to load attacker-controlled kernel modules, thereby gaining root privileges. The attack can be reliably triggered by exhausting the system's open file descriptors, causing /proc/filesystems to fail to open and forcing the vulnerable code path.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (modules/exploits/linux/local/ntfs3g_priv_esc.rb) that exploits a local privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2017-0358) in the ntfs-3g mount helper on certain versions of Ubuntu and Debian. The exploit abuses improper environment sanitization when ntfs-3g executes modprobe, allowing an attacker to load a malicious kernel module and execute arbitrary code as root. The module checks for vulnerable ntfs-3g versions and required build tools (gcc, make), uploads and compiles several C source files (including a kernel module and a rootshell), and orchestrates the privilege escalation. The default payload is a Meterpreter reverse shell, but any payload can be used. The exploit is weaponized, fully integrated into Metasploit, and provides root access on successful exploitation. The main attack vector is local, requiring an existing session on the target. The module interacts with several file system paths, notably /tmp for file drops and /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build for kernel module compilation.
