CVE-2017-0372 is a parameter injection vulnerability in the SyntaxHighlight extension for MediaWiki (version 2.0, bundled with MediaWiki 1.28.0 and earlier). The extension fails to properly sanitize user-supplied parameters, notably the 'start' parameter, which are passed directly to the Pygments library via Symfony's ProcessBuilder. This allows attackers to inject arbitrary options, leading to stored XSS and, under permissive file system configurations, arbitrary file creation. In the worst case, this can be leveraged for remote code execution by writing user-controlled PHP files to web-accessible directories.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module targeting a remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2017-0372) in the SyntaxHighlight extension of MediaWiki. The exploit abuses an option injection flaw to create and execute a PHP file in the MediaWiki document root, typically under the 'images' directory. The module supports both authenticated and unauthenticated exploitation, depending on the target's configuration. The main endpoints targeted are the MediaWiki API (api.php) and the upload directory where the PHP payload is written. The exploit is operational, leveraging Metasploit's payload system to deliver arbitrary PHP code, and is effective against MediaWiki installations with vulnerable SyntaxHighlight versions (2.0, bundled with 1.27.x and 1.28.x) that have not been patched. The code is written in Ruby and follows the standard Metasploit module structure.
