A vulnerability in the Linux Kernel (versions 2.6.38 through 4.14) exists due to improper use of pmd_mkdirty() in the touch_pmd() function within the Transparent Huge Pages (THP) implementation. When touch_pmd() is invoked via get_user_pages(), the page middle directory (pmd) can be marked dirty without a copy-on-write (COW) cycle, breaking the logic of can_follow_write_pmd(). This allows overwriting of read-only huge pages, such as the zero huge page and sealed shmem files, under certain conditions.

This repository contains a proof-of-concept (POC) exploit for the Huge Dirty Cow vulnerability (CVE-2017-1000405) in the Linux kernel. The exploit is implemented in C (main.c) and demonstrates the ability to overwrite the system's huge zero page by exploiting a race condition involving madvise, mmap, and write operations on /proc/self/mem. The README provides setup instructions, specifically requiring transparent huge pages to be enabled. The exploit does not provide a direct privilege escalation or shell, but serves as a demonstration of the vulnerability's impact. The code is self-contained, with no external network or remote attack vectors, and targets local Linux systems with the vulnerable kernel configuration.
