CVE-2017-18078 is a local privilege-escalation vulnerability in systemd-tmpfiles in systemd before version 237. The flaw arises because systemd-tmpfiles attempts to perform ownership and permission changes on hardlinked files in situations where such operations should be prevented. An unprivileged local user can create or leverage a hard link to a target file they do not control, and systemd-tmpfiles may then apply privileged metadata changes to that target. This undermines intended hardlink-based access restrictions and can affect sensitive system files, including cases demonstrated against /etc/passwd.
