CVE-2019-6111 is an insufficient input validation flaw in the scp client implementation derived from the legacy rcp protocol, affecting OpenSSH 7.9 and similarly impacted downstream implementations such as Dropbear before the relevant backported fix. During an scp download, the server controls the file and directory metadata returned to the client. The vulnerable client performs only limited validation of the object names supplied by the server and verifies only a narrow subset of unsafe path conditions, such as basic directory traversal. As a result, a malicious scp server, or an active attacker able to tamper with the session, can cause the client to accept unexpected filenames and write files other than those the user requested. In recursive transfers, attacker-controlled subdirectory structure can also be manipulated, expanding the overwrite scope within the destination tree.
