CVE-2020-11108 is a critical vulnerability in Pi-hole through version 4.4, specifically in the Gravity updater component (gravity.sh). The vulnerability allows an authenticated user to inject arbitrary flags into a curl command executed as root by supplying crafted blocklist URLs. This enables the attacker to write arbitrary files (such as PHP shells) to the web directory, leading to remote code execution as the www-data user. Further, due to a sudo rule permitting www-data to run the pihole command as root without a password, the attacker can escalate privileges to root by overwriting a PHP file (teleporter.php) and executing it. The root cause is improper input sanitization and unsafe shell command construction in gravity_DownloadBlocklistFromUrl.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (modules/exploits/unix/http/pihole_blocklist_exec.rb) that exploits a remote command execution vulnerability (CVE-2020-11108) in Pi-Hole versions 4.4 and below. The exploit works by adding a malicious blocklist entry, forcing an update (gravity), and planting a PHP backdoor in the webroot. The module then triggers the backdoor to execute arbitrary PHP payloads as root. The exploit requires the attacker to know the Pi-Hole admin password if authentication is enabled, and the exploit server must be accessible on port 80. The code is operational and provides a customizable payload via Metasploit, achieving root-level code execution on the target. The main endpoints targeted are the Pi-Hole admin interface and the webroot where the backdoor is planted.
