CVE-2020-3950 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in VMware Fusion (11.x before 11.5.2), VMware Remote Console for Mac (11.x and prior before 11.0.1), and Horizon Client for Mac (5.x and prior before 5.4.0). The vulnerability arises from improper use of setuid binaries, which can be exploited by a local attacker with normal user privileges to escalate their privileges to root on the affected system.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (modules/exploits/osx/local/vmware_fusion_lpe.rb) that exploits a local privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2020-3950) in VMware Fusion for macOS (versions 10.1.3 through 11.5.3). The exploit abuses the 'Open VMware USB Arbitrator Service' setuid binary, which can be launched from an attacker-controlled location, allowing execution of arbitrary code as root. The module uploads a payload (default: Meterpreter reverse shell) to a user-writable directory, creates a hard link to the vulnerable binary, and launches it to trigger the payload with root privileges. For version 11.5.3, the exploit includes a race condition to bypass an incomplete patch. The module is operational, providing a root shell if successful, and is designed for use within the Metasploit framework. The main fingerprintable endpoints are the VMware Fusion application files and directories on the target macOS system.
