CVE-2020-9488 is an improper certificate validation vulnerability in the Apache Log4j 2 SMTPAppender. When establishing an SMTPS connection, the appender does not properly reject a TLS certificate whose hostname does not match the configured SMTP server. A network adversary can therefore present a host-mismatched certificate and intercept the appender's SMTPS traffic.
