CVE-2021-29425 is an improper pathname restriction vulnerability in Apache Commons IO versions 2.2 through 2.6 (before 2.7). The flaw is in FilenameUtils.normalize(), which can return certain malformed traversal-style inputs without removing a leading parent-directory component. An application that treats this output as safely normalized and uses it to construct a filesystem path can therefore permit traversal into the immediate parent directory.

This repository demonstrates an XXE (XML External Entity) vulnerability in Apache Tika (CVE-2021-29425) using Java. The structure includes two main Java files: VulnerableXXEParser.java, which parses an SVG file (sample.svg) using Tika's AutoDetectParser without XXE protections, and SafeXXEParser.java, which disables external DTDs and schemas to prevent XXE. The sample.svg file contains an XXE payload that attempts to read /etc/passwd. The fix.sh script can replace the vulnerable parser with the safe version. The repository serves as a proof-of-concept to show how XXE can be exploited in Tika and how to mitigate it. No network endpoints are present; the attack is local, targeting file system access via malicious XML input.
