CVE-2021-35939 is an incomplete fix for earlier RPM directory-symlink vulnerabilities. RPM performed unsafe-symlink validation only on the immediate parent directory of a file being created, without validating intermediary ancestor directories. A locally unprivileged user who controls an ancestor directory can introduce an unsafe symbolic-link traversal and cause RPM package-installation operations to access an unintended location, potentially modifying root-owned files.
