CVE-2021-47153 affects the Linux kernel Intel ICH SMBus (i2c-i801) driver after interrupt support was introduced. When a timed-out I2C transaction triggers bus recovery, setting the controller KILL bit generates an interrupt. The i801 interrupt handler is not prepared to distinguish this recovery interrupt from successful transaction completion and processes it as the latter. For block transactions, this incorrect state handling can result in an out-of-range memory access. The fix suppresses interrupts while resetting the I2C bus and re-enables them for the next transaction.
