CVE-2022-1158 is a local memory-corruption vulnerability in the Linux kernel Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) component, introduced upstream in Linux kernel 5.2. When updating a guest page-table entry, the affected cmpxchg_gpte() path improperly uses the user-controlled vm_pgoff value as the offset for obtaining a page frame number (PFN). Because both vaddr and vm_pgoff are controllable from a host user-mode process, KVM can write to PFNs outside the intended userspace mapping. The resulting invalid write can corrupt kernel memory and may trigger exceptions, including use-after-free conditions.
