CVE-2022-1998 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel fanotify subsystem. In copy_event_to_user(), a file descriptor could be installed into the process descriptor table before copy_info_records_to_user() completed. If the latter operation failed, the error-cleanup path released the descriptor and associated file object despite the descriptor-table entry already being visible, leaving a stale entry that could subsequently be used after free. The affected logic was introduced in Linux kernel 5.13; the correction defers fd_install() until the information-copy and remaining operations have succeeded.
