CVE-2022-2196 is a regression in the Linux kernel KVM Intel nested-virtualization implementation (nVMX). KVM failed to issue an Indirect Branch Prediction Barrier (IBPB) when transitioning from an L2 nested guest back to its L1 guest. Because L1 and L2 shared guest-user and guest-kernel branch-prediction modes, an L2 guest could train indirect-branch predictions that influence indirect branches subsequently executed by L1. This permits Spectre v2 speculative-execution attacks against the L1 guest.
