CVE-2022-29072 is a vulnerability in 7-Zip on Windows through version 21.07 that can be triggered by dragging a crafted file with a .7z extension into the Help > Contents area of the 7-Zip File Manager interface. The issue is described as involving a misconfiguration in 7z.dll together with a heap overflow condition. Successful exploitation can lead to command execution in a child process spawned by 7zFM.exe. Some reporting characterized the issue as potentially enabling privilege escalation, but multiple third parties have stated that privilege escalation could not be reproduced, so the more firmly supported outcome is local command execution in the context of the 7-Zip process.
