CVE-2022-29885 is a documentation vulnerability affecting Apache Tomcat versions 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.0-M14, 10.0.0-M1 through 10.0.20, 9.0.13 through 9.0.62, and 8.5.38 through 8.5.78. The Tomcat documentation for the EncryptInterceptor incorrectly stated that it enabled Tomcat clustering to run safely over an untrusted network. In reality, while EncryptInterceptor provides confidentiality and integrity protections for cluster traffic, it does not mitigate all threats associated with exposing clustering to untrusted networks, especially denial-of-service conditions and related uncontrolled resource consumption. The issue is therefore not a cryptographic implementation flaw in the interceptor itself, but incorrect security guidance that could lead administrators to deploy clustering in an unsafe network posture.
